CARDINAL HAD TO LEARN HIS SPEECHES

CARDINAL FRINGS, Archbishop of Cologne, returned to Bonn from Vienna on Monday after an unsuccessful eye operation at the clinic of the University of Vienna.

There has been no decision on whether he should undergo a second operation. a spokesman said.

The 75-year-old Cardinal, who had a cataract on his right eye has been suffering from increasing blindness to such an extent that he had to memorise all the Latin speeches he had made during the first session of the Vatican Council, of which he is one of the ten presiding cardinals.

Cardinal Koenig of Vienna visited Cardinal Frings on the day after the operation. West German Chancellor, Dr. Adenauer sent a telegram extending his wishes for the Cardinal's rapid convalescence and complete recovery.
