SIXTH-FORM pupils at Stonyhurst College were presented with a set of unusual challenges when mountaineer Squash Falconer recently asked them to help her plan her next expedition.
At the end of March this year Ms Falconer will travel to Nepal to co-lead an expedition to Everest and, if all goes well, become the first woman ever to paraglide down from the summit.
She said: “I climbed Mont Blanc in 2009 and paragliding from the summit planted the seed that this was some thing I could include on the Everest adventure.” Her visit to Stonyhurst gave students first-hand experience of what it is like to be involved in the meticulous planning of a mountaineering expedition. “After briefing students about the trip we held workshops in which teams of students were given a number of tasks,” she explained.
“They had to plan how to promote and advertise the trip, to identify and research three charities the expedition could support.”
