WEST RIDING REFUSES GRANT Dishonours A zreement of Two Years Back

EDUCATION COMMITTEE RESCIND PROMISED GRANTS The West Riding Education Committee last week reversed the agreement of two years ago whereby it eves understood that the Catholic senior schools should be given a 78 per cent. grant and allowed 100 per cent. reserved teachers.

Some seven local schemes embracing Dewsley, Batley, Halifax, Harrogate, Pontefract, Rotherham and Shipley are affected by this decision, which is entirely unexpected, despite the fact that In the spring there occurred the rejection of certain proposals, to the surprise of the Chairman of the Education Committee.

The position in the West Riding, in view of this decision of its Education Committee, is similar to that created by the refusal of Liverpool to make grants; but this reversal of policy is aggravated by the fact that it is made when the time limit set by the Education Act is almost expired.
