FR PAUL Chavasse, Provost of the Birmingham Oratory and Postulator of the Newman Cause, gave a brief update on the state of the Cause at the end of a musical oratory to commemorate the 205th anniversary of the birth of the Venerable John Henry Newman on February 21, 1801, writes Peter Jennings.
Fr Chavasse told the congregation at the Oratory church in Edgbaston about the reputed second "miracle" cure attributed to Cardinal Newman. Fr Gregory Winterton, former provost of the Birmingham Oratory, Fr Philip Cleevely of the Oratory, and Bishop David McGough, an Auxiliary Bishop of Birmingham, spoke on the subject of "Cardinal Newman and Sacred Scripture".
The talks were interspersed with instrumental music played by Fr Guy Nicholls and Sam Mason, and motets by William Byrd and Claudio Monteverdi sung by the Oratory choir.
