Britain's Opus Dei head dies in hiking accident

MGR PHILIP SHERRINGTON, the Regional Vicar of Opus Dei in Great Britain, died on Monday after a hiking accident in the hills of Connemara, West Ireland. The. energetic 51-year-old had been attending a course for priests.
Born in Middlesborough, he became a member of Opus Dei while an undergraduate at Manchester University.
From 1968-1970 he worked in London as director of Netherhall House, the university residence inspired by Opus Dei founder Mgr Josemaria Escriva. Ordained priest in 1970, he went to Rome in 1974 to work in the central offices of Opus Dei, alongside the founder.
Two years later he was appointed Regional Vicar of Opus Dei in the UK, a post he held for the 19 years until his death. Andrew Soane, spokesman for Opus Dei, described him as "a keen stamp collector, a very steady pair of hands and a good friend."
On the beatification of Escriva in 1992 he was appointed a Monsignor. A frequent pilgrim to WatsIngham, he had a deep devotion to Our Lady.
