Your article of July 22 headed "Society Shuns Shelter Deal" may have given some of your readers the impression that Shelter and the Catholic Building Society arc at loggerheads. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Over the last few months Shelter has written to every building society in this country about red-lining — the practice of some building societies of refusing mortgages solely because a house is located in an inner city area and regardless of its physical condition or likely life. The only building society to reipond at all positively to our approach was the Catholic Building Society. Although justly proud of the care with which it surveys buildings and of the fact that none of its borrowers have ever defaulted on a mortgage, the Catholic Building Society s annual report makes it very clear that the society is not discriminating against older houses in inner city areas.
Because of its unique record of social concern, .1, for one, have transferred my savings to the Catholic Building Society.
