The laity is not sleeping — it is waiting to be led into battle

From Mr G E Hester

SIR Congratulations on your front page (March 24) giving such tremendous support for the campaign against euthanasia. Congratulations and thanks, too, to His Grace the Archbishop of Cardiff for his energetic leadership of this campaign which we must win.

One correction to His Grace, when he speaks of the laity as a "sleeping giant". I assure His Grace that we, the laity, are not sleeping we are more like soldiers who are eager to do battle but have never been led into the attack.

Now that we are being asked to enter the fray, we will fight courageously. Let us all support the archbishop.

Quite simply, we need thousands of letters to our MPs telling them that it is clear Catholic teaching that no Catholic must ever vote for anyone who supports abortion or euthanasia. Pope John Paul II slated this as did Cardinal Ratzinger. We must have no more half-hearted statements that we disagree with you but will still vote for you: that has rendered us politically ineffective.

The people who are sleeping are the agencies of the bishops' conference, with all their highly paid officers: as I write this, not one of them even mentions on a website the archbishop's great campaign against euthanasia.

Yours faithfully, ERIC HES'TER Bolton, Lancs
