A report that Pope Paul is planning to visit Britain was denied by spokesmen for the Apostolic Delegation and the Catholic Information Office in London this week. The report followed the attendance at Canterbury Cathedral last week of three cardinals and the Apostolic Delegate, Archbishop Heim, at the enthronement of Dr Coggan as Archbishop of Canterbury.
Vatican sources pointed out that Pope Paul's presence in the United Kingdom at present would probably provoke further incidents in Northern Ireland rather than improve the situation, as had been suggested.
