Pope not coming to Britain
A report that Pope Paul is planning to visit Britain was denied by spokesmen for the Apostolic Delegation and the Catholic Information Office in London this week. The report followed the attendance at Canterbury Cathedral last week of three cardinals and the Apostolic Delegate, Archbishop Heim, at the enthronement of Dr Coggan as Archbishop of Canterbury.
Vatican sources pointed out that Pope Paul's presence in the United Kingdom at present would probably provoke further incidents in Northern Ireland rather than improve the situation, as had been suggested.
Dom Appleby is Downside Head
Dom Raphael Appleby has been appointed Headmaster of Downside School, Somerset. in succession to Don Aelred Watkin. Dom Watkin, 56, became headmaster in 1962 after 14 years as a housenta.ster at the school. On retinng from the • post at the end of the Easter term he will work as parish priest of St Benet's Church, Beccles, Suffolk.
Stonyhurst seeks new bursar
Stonyhurst College, the Jesuit-run school in Lancashire, is looking for a bursar because of the death of Brigadier Peter Lawson, the first lay bursar the college has ever had. Stonyhurst, which is helping families who cannot afford the full fees, has launched a £1,250,000 development appeal to cover the next decade.
St Bede's brings in £55,000
A centenary appeal for £100,000 at St Bede's College, Manchester, has already passed the halfway mark. Mr John Broughton, general chairman of the appeal campaign, announced that £55,000 had been raised. The money will be used to improve the school buildings and for general educational purposes. St Bede's College was founded in 1876.
World Day of Peace
Sunday. February 9, will be celebrated throughout the Church as a World Day of Peace. The Day was established in 1969 by Pope Paul to deepen awareness among Christians of their responsibility for peace.
Pax Christi, the International Catholic Peace Movement, has produced a special kit to help parishes and schools. It contains posters, prayers for special peace liturgies and reading lists, and it may be obtained from Pax Christi at Blackfriars Hall, Southampton Road, London NW5. So far more than 100 kits have been sold at a price of £1.
Ringo to play the Pope
ExHeade Ringo Starr will play the Pope in the forthcoming K,2 VI Russell film on the life of Hungarian composer Franz Liszt. Roger Daltrey, singer with the Who pop group, will play the leading role.
