The Only Priest In Odessa

Report From Poland

The Kurjor Warszawsky publishes the news that the soviet authorities have arrested in Odessa Mgr. Alexander Frison, consecrated iri 1926 as . titular bishop of Limyra to be administrator of the southeastern part of the diocese of Tiraspol.

The bishop is of German origin, and descends from a family of settlers who came to Russia over a century ago. He was consecrated by Mgr. d'Herbigny at the same time as Mgri. Neveu, Amudru and Sloskan. For many years the bolsheviks dared not molest him, as the Italian government took a special interest in him because he had ministered to Italians in Russia during the war and revolution.

If the news is correct, and there is no reason to doubt it, no Catholic priest is left in Odessa, the third largest city in the U.S.S.R., with a very large Catholic population.
