`Save Christians from Islam persecution'
A HUMAN RIGHTS group which supports Christians persecuted in Muslim countries has organised a "Suffering Church Sunday" for later on this year, writes Lynne Thorabie. The St Barnabas Fund is planning the event in November, in an attempt to raise awareness of the suffering of Christians at the hands of certain Muslim regimes.
A spokeswoman from the St Barnabas Fund told the Herald: "We are distributing our leaflets to the heads of all the Churches, so they can deal with it.
"Persecution against Christians is on the increase in most countries; there has been a rise in Islamic extremism throughout the world.
"In many countries, the governments have been trying to rein in the extreme elements, while still portraying themselves as Islamic forces."
In the Muslim world, there are at least 40 million Christians with some being members of the oldest Churches.
Other Christians have converted from Islam in spite of the threat of a death penalty hanging over them.
In several Muslim States, Christians can meet only secretly for worship, and are forbidden to proselytise or share their faith. In February, a Christian village in Pakistan Shantigar was destroyed after it was attacked by a mob of 30,000 Muslim rioters who were burning churches, homes, vehicles and shops.
Human rights group Jubilee Action is trying to force the Pakistan government to repeal the blasphemy law to prevent further abuses of Christians.
