A slur on Guyana church I WAS shocked by your

report (May 16) of Amerindian dancers in London which cast slurs on Catholic Church leaders in Guyana.

Everyone familiar with Guyana is aware of the oppression in that country and the courageous stand for human rights taken by Bishop Benedict Singh and other church leaders. That stand is supported by the vast majority of Guyanese Catholics as well as others both Christian and non-Christian.

The governing party in Guyana would have everyone believe that it has no quarrel with the Catholic Church but malicious churchmen. Your report is an almost word-forword quote from this party propaganda.

Bishop Singh's protests about the conduct of the general election in December has brought the Church continuous harassment. That election was blatantly fraudulent.

Sadly, a few Catholics, seduced by the party line, have taken an entirely uncritical attitude to the regime. They have found themselves truly "out on a limb". Any good they may accomplish is offset by the scandal of their silence in the face of open injustice.
