Prison 'not the answer'

TESTIMONIES from the victims of domestic violence, persecution and other forms of abuse and marginalisation set the context for exploring key questions about ways of manifesting Christ's way in forgiveness and reconciliation at the annual conference of the National Justice and Peace Network, writes Citra Sidhu.

More than 300 people gathered at the weekend to reflect on forms of imprisonment and ways of restoring freedom under the theme of the biblical' concept of Jubilee. Brendan O'Fri el, former chairman of the Prison Governors' Associatiorx, spoke in favour of the need for Christian ideas to be employed in the criminal justice debate. He called imprisonment "a very expensive way of making bad people worse" and attacked the simple solutions often offered to the complex problem of crime and punishment.
