• Bishop Richard Holloway, the head of the Scottish Episcopal Church, has published a book, Godless Morality: Keeping Religion Out Of Ethics, in which he claims casual sex was not always unethical, likening it to having a cup of coffee or a hamburger.

"Bringing God into the moral debate is problematic, no matter how we respond," wrote the bishop, who supports homosexual marriage.

"If we think of God as the dictator of our moral systems we run into difficulty."
