Christmas Dechristianised in Nazi Germany

Front Our Geneva Correspondent

"Chrietmao is a Nordic feast of pagan origin and has only been ' taken over' by the Christians.

" It must be deprived of its Christian and ecclesiastic or ' denominational ' character and be transformed into a Volksweihnacht of the Nazi organisetieing and particularly of the Winter Relief Work."

SO GOES FORTH THE NAZI EDICT This year every effort has been made In Germany to avoid in the radio, in the Press, and in the school, any allusion to the Christian significance of Christmas.

NO CAROLS Only inside the churches will it be

allowed. Certain Old Christmas customs going back to pagan times were cultivated, but no reference was made to Christ and to His birth in Palestine. The Nordic TVeilinacht was simply a feast of the rising light.

Christmas carols of a Christian character were not allOwed in the schools.
