THE CATHOLIC Building Society is unique in having repeatedly increased the number of home loans each year for the past 14 years, and made such a consistently high proportion of home loans to first-time buyers, said its chairman, the Hon Mrs Nona Byrne last week.
Speaking at the society's annual meeting in London, Mrs Byrne reported assets increased by 13.07 per cent in the year to a record £6,054,067 and f.1,093,598 advanced in home loans another record.
Mrs Byrne hit out at the "marked and widespread absence of effective membership cornmuni cat ion among large societies, which only serves to encourage belief in the successful future of small societies, including the Catholic Building Society," The future did not lie only with the largest societies. "The small society will survive and even prosper" she said. "The greater danger is that in striving to grow it may actually lose its distinctive identity and the close links with its members,"
