on abortion (Catholic Herald, September 18) would you please be so kind as to publicise that the "Liberal Democrat Party" does not proportionally represent the whole of the Liberal Democrat electorate; and we have pointed out to Paddy Ashdown that, before making the Conference decision on this matter a part of Liberal Democrat policy, he should stick to his principle on proportional representation.

Freedom of conscience is not to be the play-thing of any party's policy but is to be enshrined in the British constitution as a political philosophy.

We would ask your readers of whatever political party, or no party to write in support of David Alton's stand on this matter to: Paddy Ashdown, Liberal Democrat's HQ, 4 Cowley Street, London SWI. He is a good leader and will listen. Clare Strong Bexleyheath, Kent
