SUDAN is on the brink of a famine as catastrophic as that in Somalia, a missionary recently expelled by the Sudanese authorities warned this week.
An Italian Comboni missionary, Sr Giulia Fusi, who spent nine years in Sudan before being ordered out of the country last month during a crackdown on the Church, said that while the eyes of the world were focussed on the famine in Somalia the situation in the southern Sudan had become just as bad.
The lives of thousands of people were at risk as the civil war in the southern Sudan destroys everything in its path, Sr Fusi said. The world community had a last chance to avert a human disaster of gargantuan dimensions by bringing the conflict in the region to an end, she said.
