Greece, arrived by air in Greece last Saturday from Rome. It was returned to the Greek Orthodox Church as a gesture of Church unity by Pope Paul. A Greek Orthodox delegation flew to Rome the day before to accompany the relic to Patras.
Cardinal Bea led a party of 15 cardinals accompanying the skull, which is encased in gold,
and presented it to Bishop Constantine of Patras, where St.
Andrew the Apostle was martyred. His skull was kept there until 1462, when it was
removed to Rome to preserve it from the advancing Turks.
Thousands lined the route taken by the cardinals to Patras Cathedral, where a special. service was held. The skull will remain on view to the public for 40 days before being transferred to the crypt.
COMMON BAPTISM
Cardinal Bea. in presenting the skull. said: "For centuries we have lived as strangers, though common baptism made us both children of God and brothers of one another. May this short visit here become a message of understanding, brotherly love and peace."
Archbishop Chrysostomos of Greece, who adamantly opposes any Catholic approach On the question of Church unity, did not attend the Patras ceremonies, He was represented by 25 bishops and metropolitan bishops.
Three days before the relic left Rome, Pope Paul and the Vatican Council attended a commemorative service in the basilica of St. Peter's. The Pope himself carried the skull into the basilica and placed it on the altar. It is encased in a new silver reliquary in the form of a head of the first-chosen of the Apostles and brother of St. Peter.
The Council session was preceded by the Mass of St. Andrew. at which Archbishop Koenig of Vienna preached. He recalled that when the skull was received in Rome in 1462, Pope Pius II said it would be returned in honour to Patras when the occasion was opportune,
