The Utstein Cloister, a monastery built by Augustinian monks in the 13th century on Mosteroy Island, north of Stavanger, and one of the finest relics of the Middle Ages in Norway, is well on the way to restoration.
Lost to the Church after the Reformation, it was first used for Protestant worship, later came into private hands and ultimately was allowed to fall into ruin.
T h e Norwegian Arch&ological Society plans to finish the project for the Cloister's 700th anniversary in 1960. The first stage of the work, including the large refectory in the south wing, was completed last year and workmen are now engaged on the east wing.
