Who is committed to marriage?

CANON GALVIN (Catholic Herald, 18 November) has, I regret, misread his New Testament.

Jesus taught that neither a man nor a woman could divorce his or her partner, that is, send the partner away.

He gave us teaching (that has been preserved for us) on the innocent or abandoned partner. That gap has been differently filled in the New Testament.

St Matthew (Chapter 19) holds that the innocent or abandoned partner is still committed to the marriage. St Paul (1 Cor 7) teaches the opposite.

These are complex matters that cannot be properly dealt with on the Letters columns of a newspaper.
