I CAN remember schoolday at study in the library of St Ignatius College, then in Stamford Hill, and observing, on one occasion, to my Anglican neighbour, William Shergold, that Fr Colvin's cat was sitting on a copy of Dante's Inferno.
I was reminded of this incident when I read Phil Mason's recently published pamphlet, More Bridges of Love, which features Fr Bill Shergold, pictured here, as "The Ton Up Vicar".
Apparently, after his Jesuit education, William went on to become an Anglican Vicar, famous in the East End of London as the leather-clad vicar with a special mission to 900 rockers, the young motorcyclists of the roaring sixties.
The "bikers" were his pastoral care and he himself rode a Honda 500.
After a sojourn in rural parishes he is back in his beloved Poplar. I wish him well in his ministry. More Bridges of Love is published by Norheirnsund Books, I Whitney Road, Burton Latimer, Kettering, Northants, price 95p.
