Patriotism and Piety Go Hand in Hand

Says Bishop Marshall

Front Our Own Correspondent "TAUB PATRIOTISM IN TIIIS COUNTRY CANNOT BE divorced from our traditional Christian faith and survive," declared Mgr. Henry Vincent Marshall, Bishop of Salford, preaching in St. John's Cathedral, Salford, on Easter Sunday.

" Let us therefore be true to our Faith and we will be true to God, to our fellow men and to our country.

Our Christian Heritage

" To our Christian heritage we owe the strength and endurance of those human institutions which have guarded the happiness of mankind for almost 2,000 years.

" On this Christian heritage have been erected those customs, laws and relationships which have made this country great. If history is to be our guide and teacher it certainly proves that patriotism and Christian practice go hand in hand. The more fervent the piety of a nation, the greater, the more enduring is its patriotism. The more materialistic and the more unbelieving it is, the less will be its patriotism.

They will Worship Themselves

"The people will not worship God they will worship themselves; if they reject God's laws they will reject human authority; if they refuse to believe in God's final judgment of the good and the bad then the just claims of their fellow men will receive scant considera tion.

" True patriotism in this country cannot be divorced from our traditional Chriatian faith and survive " C ir patriotism will be none the less fervent if we cherish for the stranger charity. justice and peace.

"Our Faith does not teach peace at the price of shame, neither does it preach empty military glory or unjust conquest for the sake of gain. It preaches peace on earth to men of good will."
