k AR WILLIAM TEELING edits a lvi news letter. It

is called the Britfah News Letter, and there are two editions of it, one for children and one for adults.

Here is the sort of thing that Mr Teeing writes in his news letter: "For the last few weeks I have been travelling all over Great Britain, and I have been struck by the fact that London is no longer completely representative of British feeling. There is an unexpected prosperity in the country; it is only the better-off people, who do not live by trade, who are really hard hit, and they live mostly in London."

I should add that it is not in the children's edition of the news letter that this information occurs.

Beauty

TWO hundred and nine million dollars will American women spend this year in the 78,000 beauty parlours affiliated to the American Coemeticians' Association, according to the reckonings of the Association.

Spewing • . •

WITH dreary persistence Father Coughlin's naper. Social Justtico, continues week after week its HateEngland campaign. In a recent istme a whole back page was taken up with an account of the activities of the "British Serpent." The style of this hate propaganda is reminiscent of some of the least intelligent efforts of Goebbels.

" Once more a boa-constrictor-Perfidious Albion-is crawling across the American landscape. spewing its unctuous lies. Its purpose is to lure this nation into the lair of war to make the world safe for international plunder."

Listen to history as it is writ by the Coughlin ites : "In centuries gone by she (Britain) conquered Canada, wiping out the autonomy of the new French-Canadian nation by fire, sword, rapine and butchery on the Plains of Abraham.

"Under the noble Clive she crushed India, bringing British civilisation to the Hindus by tying their chiefs to the mouths of cannon and blowing them into kingdom come.

"Upon the Chinese she forced opium at a profit for herself, thus making it possible for many an aristocratic family in Mayfair to look sanctimoniously upon a portrait of its progenitor who waxed fat on the degradation of the oriental Coolies.

" Our ancestors in the Thirteen Colonies felt the sting of the British lash. They knew well who introduced slavery into the Southland. Our generation understands who repudiated the debts of the World War.

" The same Britain double-crossed the

Jews, vat only in days gone by when she loaded them into the hulls of her ships which she sank in the English Channel, but in these, our times, when she repudiated the Balfour Declaration, thereby throwing Palestine to the wolves."

After some more crudities the article ends with an appeal for contributions to Fr. Coughlin's Broadcasting Fund SO that Fr. Coughlin may continue to spread principles of genuine Americanism ": which seems to be the most considerable libel on " Americanism " yet attempted.

The New Degree

I DO not remember having encountered

before the following degree: Certificated Highly Efficient Headmaster. It comes after the rather more conventional degrees that follow a headmaster's name, on a letterhead before me.

nunyanesque

DAIVION RUNYAN, whose grotesque little stories about America's shabby criminals have brought new phrases into the language, has been letting off steam about contemporary obscenities in books and the theatre.

He ends a modest blast in this way:

"We must say, if we were in the crusading racket, we could think of a lot more things more deplorable than stage smut. That is, after all, just a minor offence against public decency. It Is bad, yes. We have said that. Others have said it, too. It is shameful. But in the last analysis it is just a tiny reflection of a far greater and more alarming thing, which is the prodigious drift of civilisation from God and His teachings, to which civilisation must soon return, else we are lost."

Sun nun

COME results of an examination at Wah Yan College : The sun rise due Ewe because the. earth was run the sun. Surely only the earth was running along the sun, not the sun was walking over our heads.

A volcano is a kind of mountain. When it explodes it is a burning mountain, but after it has red it becomes a mountain as usual.

Unquiet Corner

TOO late I loved Thee, 0 Thou Beauty of ancient days, yet ever new! too late I loved Thee! And behold, Thou wart within, and I abroad, and there I searched for Thee, deformed I, plunging amid those fair forms, which Thou hadst made. Thou wort with me, but I was not with Thee. Things held me far from Thee, which, unless they were In Thee, were not at all. Thou calledst, and shoutedst, and burstedst my deafness. Thou fiashedst, shonest, and scatteredst my blindness. Thou breathedst odours, and I drew in breath and pant for Thee. I tasted, and hunger and thirst. Thou toUchedst me, and I burned for Thy peace. When I shall with my whole self cleave to Thee. I shall nowhere have sorrow, or labour; and my life shell wholly live, as wholly full of Thee.

Saint Augustine.
