Gold Crown • For Stockport Statue
The statue of Our Lady of Fatima in St. Mary's church, Heaton Norris, Stockport, the " church of the roses," has been crowned with a solid gold chaplet studded with diamonds, rubies, amethysts and sapphires. The golden crown was made from gifts received by the parish priest, the Rev. James Turner.
The statue of Our Lady gained world-wide prominence in 1947 when the times of which the crown was made were found to have remain'ed unfaded months aeter the May ceremonies, The 1947 crown is still on the statue, as are the crowns placed there in 1948 and this year. Fr. Turner bought the statue in 1946 when he was visiting Portugal.
