Plea to pilgrims

THE Cardinal of Seville has warned foreign Catholics against pilgrimages to Palmar de Troya, where it is said Our Lady appeared. Cardinal Jose Maria Bueno y Monreal is concerned about the continuing action of the selfstyled Carmelite Order of the Holy Face which is gathered around a blind man called Clemente Dominguez, who claims to be Pope. The Cardinal issued similar warnings in 1970, 1972 and 1976 and now says: "Upon learning that the order is conducting a promotional campaign in 1980, we want to remind everyone that the condemnation and warning of 1970 are still valid.
"The perpetrators of these deplorable events have violated the discipline of the Church and continue under excommunication for their schismatic defiance of the Pope and the bishops, having given no sign of repentance." Dominguez and his followers make all the usual demands of those out of sympathy with Vatican II by calling for retention of the Tridentine Mass and the pre-conciliar structures.
But they go much further by condemning Paul VI and his successors as imposters and issuing a string of general excommunications.
Contributions from foreign pilgrims have enabled them to invest in land in Spain.
