The shifting sands

From Miss Heather Buttery SIR – When a parish priest (Features, September 14) addresses the vital question of evangelisation and gratuitously cocks a snook at the Curé d’Ars, we suspect that all is not well.
Fr Shaun Middleton then goes on to imply that a priest’s “personality” and his “crisis of identity” are key elements in taking up the Cross: now, we suspect that we are not standing upon the rock of Peter, but upon the shifting sands of psychobabble.
A priest is not a celebrity or a master of ceremonies. He does not need to dominate by virtue of his “personality”. He does not even need to be a scholar. He needs to love God, to seek holiness through prayer and humility and to let the Holy Spirit do the rest. That’s “how to win them back”.
Yours faithfully, HEATHER BUTTERY By e-mail
