Seeking a refund

From Mr Peter McGauley SIR – Since you kindly published my letter (August 24), a series of subsequent letters, followed by the excellent article (September 21) by Eric Hester, have made it very apparent that there has been considerable editing of our traditional hymns that mutilates our Catholic heritage. There has been no correspondence defending the editing and neither have we been advised if it has been done with or without episcopal approval.
Eric Hester conjectures that parishes that bought these books under the misapprehension that they were getting the original words are entitled to a refund. I believe that parishes currently using these books could claim that, due to the unasked-for, unwanted and unmentioned rewording of some of our traditional hymns, the product has changed and that in some cases the changes render the new product not of a merchantable quality or indeed fit for purpose by discerning purchasers.
Where do we go from here? As chairman of our parish finance committee, I am tabling making the return of these pitiful books to the publishers in the expectation of a full refund an agenda item for our next meeting. Do we stand alone?
However, rather than parochial piecemeal activities, how much more effective it would be for the campaign to be led and co-ordinated by the Herald.
Sir, the ball is in your court.
Yours faithfully, PETER McGAULEY Sidmouth, Devon
