Neat pigeonholes

From Mr Anthony McGinty SIR – Despite the fact that nowadays “things are much more complicated” compared with “once upon a time when there were practising Catholics and nonpractising Catholics”, Brendan O’Neill (Comment, September 21) neatly simplifies the complications of today by reducing them to “shadow Catholics”. and “Lapsed Catholics” (his capital “L” ).
I know of no one who would fit into either of the neat pigeonholes which he has created. If my experience is typical, then the Church is scarcely being undermined by these imagined camps. Which of these labels, for example, ought the tens of thousands of young people presently preparing to go to Sydney next year for World Youth Day wear?
Mr O’Neill perhaps would do well to take stock of the company he keeps.
Yours faithfully, ANTHONY McGINTY Bearsden, Glasgow
