Of New Housing Areas In London
New school is already too small
TWO foundation stones were laid by Bishop Bright on Saturday for a church and school in Castle Bromwich, Birmingham.
The new church, to be dedicated to Our Lady, Mother of God, will be in the Shard End area of Castle Bromwich. A large statue of Our Lady is to he set up over the entrance. The building is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The primary school, to be dedicated to the Holy Angels. will accommodate 280 children and is expected to open next spring. Fr. Thomas Whittle, the parish priest, says that such is the growth of the parish that already the school is too small and some 500 children are wanting admission.
The Catholic population has risen from about 500 to nearly 3,000 over the past few months owing to the opening up of new housing estates. This means that children are now taken each day in a fleet of buses to Birmingham, Kingstandirig, Endington and Gravelly Hill, Church and school, both designed by Mr. J. T. Lynch, arc expected to cost over £60,000.
Bishop Bright expressed his appreciation of the work of Mgr. Canon Manion, who by his efforts as chairman of the diocesan schools commission, had made such progress possible.
The beginning of post-Reformation Catholic life in the area is due partly to Cardinal Griffin who, when he was administrator in Birmingham of Fr. Hudson's Homes, went to Castle Bromwich to say Mass.
