Italian Priest Invents Electric Organ An Italian priest, Fr. Laurent' Alfredo. 0.E.S.A., was presented by Mussolini with a prize for his invention of an electromagnetic organ in the palazzo Senelia. The occasion was the national congress of inventors held recently in Rome In which about 900 inventors participated. The electromagnetic organ invented by Fr. Alfredo is according to the Osservatore Romano, very much smaller than the organ commonly used, but is able to give the same effects. The inventor has promised to give a demonstration of the powers of the instrument over the radio.
Mussolini Gives Statue To Saragossa On June. 3 a statue of Augustus, the gift of Signor Mussolini, was solemnly presented to the city of Saragossa in Spain.
Saragossa originally Caesar Augustus, was named after the Emperor and marked the arrival of the statue from the founder of the new Roman Empire with fitting celebrations The ceremony of presentation was performed by Count Zoppi, Italian Charge d'Affaires, in the presence of Senor Ibanez Martin, Minister of National Education, all the civic authorities and a vast crowd of people.
Saragossa is the borne of the famous Shrine of Our Lady of the Pillar, which this year is celebrating a centenary.
Bishop Calls for Action against Strike-Breakers An astonishing demonstration of enthusiasm greeted the address given by the Bishop of Amarillo, Mgr. Robert Lucey, to the American Federation of Labour's Southwest Confeience, at Dallas, U.S.A., recently. The Bishop, who urged unity among the labour forces of America, deplored the economic conditions that make it impossible for a large proportion of the American people to buy what the country produces, advised Negro and Mexican workers to be properly organised so that employers might not use them for breaking strikes, outlined the teaching of the Church as to the means of producing a better social system, was wildly cheered. Labour delegates crowded into the aisles to shake his hand as he was leaving the meeting. It took him over twenty-five minutes to leave the hall, so insistent was the demonstration of enthusiasm
The Bishop, who holds an honorary card in the Hodcarriers' Union in Long Beta, California, has distinguished himself frequently for his vigorous attempts at applying Catholic social teaching to the labour troubles in America in recent years.
Nun Elected To Indian Municipal Council Sister Bridget Sequeira, Superior of the Congregation of the Franciscan Missionaries of Christ King in Karachi, has been elected a Councillor of the local municipality. As an inspectress of the Mission Schools of Karachi she took keen interest in the progress of the depressed classes, for whom she established schools in different parts of Karachi. She also started free night schools for adults and sewing classes for women. This year the people of the Lyari Quarters decided to ask their friend and benefactress to represent them on the municipal council and as a result Sister Bridget was elected, nearly half the votes in the constituency being polled in her favour, the remainder being shared by the three other candidates.
Leon Degrelle Reported Shot A Berlin report quoted by the New York Herald says that the Catholic leader of the Resists in Belgium, Leon Degrelle, was shot in the fortress of Lille. According to the story he was arrested in Brussels on May 10. the day the Nazis commenced their big offensive.
Leopold's Surrender The Osservatore Romano reports that II memorandum, written and signed by the Commander of the Belgian Army, giving the reasons for the surrender of the Belgian forces, has been sent to the Apostolic Nuncio and to the Ambassadors of the United States and Italy.
Buddhist Monks at Bishop's Consecration. —A number of Buddhist monks, the Anglican Bishop of Colombo in Episcopal robes, attended by two chaplains, together with a large number of other non-Catholic notables, were present at the consecration of the first Catholic Bishop of Chilaw, Mgr. Edward Peiris, O.M.I. The consecrating prelate was the Archbishop of Colombo and the coconsecrators the Bishops of Galle and Kandy.
In Shanghai: A new Young Christian Worker centre for girls has been opened in Shanghai, at Kikawei This is the fifth that has so far been established in the city. Largest of the Y.C.W. centres in Shanghai is at Loh-ka-tse, where a hostel for 140 girls is organised.
120 Negro Converts Received: One hundred and twenty adult coloured converts were received into the Church by 23 priests at a recent ceremony at the Church of St Charles Borromeo in Harlem, New York. These baptisms bring to a total of 3,169 the number of coloured men, women and children received into the Church since Mgr. William R. McCann became pastor in 1934.
