Exiled Polish head dies

MASSES were being held within the Polish community in Britain this week following the death of Kazimierz Sabbat, the fifth President of the London-based Polish Government in Exile, which was formed after the German invasion of Poland in 1939.

Sabbat, who was aged 76, became Prime Minister of the Polish Government in Exile in 1976. Whilst in the post he organised aid for Polish students who had "fallen foul" of the authorities back home, and did much to restore relations with the Ukrainian and Czech emigre communities.

Appointed President in 1986, he thwarted an attempt by Poland's communist government to have the body of the wartime leader General Sikorski flown back to his homeland.
