Apart from revelation, is it possible to prove that God is good? (G. S. R.) Yes, because: (a) Reason tells us that God is the creator of all good in creatures; therefore He is the source of all goodness, that is, He is goodness itself. Created goodness is only, as it were, a reflection of the highest good, that is, of God.
(b) A thing is good in so far as it is desirable. Now reason tells us that God is our first beginning and our last end. In the words of St. Augustine, " Thou hast made us, 0 God, for Thyself ; and our heart is restless till it rest in Thee." A man can come to realise that no created pleasure is capable of fully satisfying him-is not this a constant theme of poetry both religious and secular ?-and hence he can reason to the existence of some supreme object which alone is capable of satisfying the craving of the human soul for happiness. This is just another way of saying that God is desirable above all else. That is, God is good above all else.
(c) Evil means the absence of some perfection or quality which should be present (e.g.. blindness is evil in so far as the blind being ought to be able to sec ; hence we say blindness is evil for a man, but we do not say the same of a stone). Now reason tells us that God is infinite in every way. Thetefore there can be no kind of defect, absolutely nothing evil, in Him. Positively, He is all good.
