Mintoff in new dispute with Church
ANEW dispute has broken out between Mr. Dom Mintoff's Malta Labour Party and the island's Catholic authorities. The subject of the controversy is simply whether the two parties are still at loggerheads or not.
Minto11 says no. He claims to have asked the Vatican to release details of secret talks to bring about a Church-Labour Party peace. These, he said, left only three points of disagreement o n which agreement would be 1)43m i'dThrro" reached later.
"By this, I understand the dispute is now non-existent," he claimed. But the Maltese Curia spokesman said the situation remained the same.
He added that the talks were confidential and underlined Mr. Mintoff's own admission that no agreement had been reached on three points under discussion.
Mr. Mintoff's party replied that it had "clear and unmistakeable evidence of a radical change for the better" in relations with Rome. "The three points on which there is not as yet complete agreement refer to issues which have arisen after the imposition of mortal sin by the local hierarchy. But even on these points the Vatican authorities—far from hurling anathemas—have expressed the hope that with the goodwill of all acceptable solutions may yet be discovered."
Finally, the Malta Curia said it would have no objection to publication of the correspondence if the Holy See consented, since the talks were with the Holy See.
"Nothing would please the Church in Malta more than to be able to announce that the talks with the Vatican have yielded a satisfactory solution to the M.L.P.-Church dispute. So far, unfortunately, there is no authority for saying, as has been said that the politicoreligious struggle is now a thing of the past.
