• DEAR CHILDREN: The answer DEAR last week's puzzle is that Poe was a poet who wrote poetry, and the numbers were those corresponding to these letters in the alphabet. Quite Easy, wasn't it?
ALL the snow we have had this
month reminds me of an old saying in Germany that if there is snow at Candlemas the badger comes out of his set because he knows the weather is going to get better; but if it is sunny he stays inside because he knows it is going to snow. I don't know how true this is, hut those of you who keep a diary might like to check up on it. making a note of the weather that comes after snow or sun on that day. And here is a limerick to remind you of it: On Candlemas Day the badger peeped out From his set; (you could just see the stripe on his snout).
" There's plenty of snow.
That means we can go Out hunting." he snuffed. as he scurried about.
Two picture books I wonder it when you are grown up you will enjoy children's hooks as much as I still do. I have spent most oh' this afternoon looking at some new ones that have iust been published: Robin Hood, retold by Eleanor Graham Vance. with lovely coloured illustrations, and a perpectly fascinating Golden Dictionary, by Ellen Wales Walpole. I know this sounds rather dull, but it is really most exciting, with little coloured pictures For each word and sometimes—as when the same word can be used in several different ways—several tiny pictures, and they are all such gay ones. too.
It costs 10s. 6d, Robin Hood is only 45. 6d. Both are published by Publicity Products, Ltd.
For the threes and fours THERE is a lovely Feast coining
quite soon. It is called Candlemas. Everyone who goes to Mass that day will be given a specially blessed candle.
We take our blessed candles home with us and take great care of them. When we light them at home we can kneel down and say this prayer.
Baby Jesus, in my heart Burns for You a little light; Help me now to keep it shining. Show me how to keep it bright. Little Jesus. I would always Do what You would want me to.
Teach me how to love You better. Keep me always close to You.
Philomena
