Legate is appointed for Rio

CARDINAL Aloisi Masella, Pre feet of the Sacred Congregation of the Sacraments, has been named by the Holy Father to preside as Papal Legate at the International Eucharistic Congress in Rio de Janeiro next July.

Cardinal Aloisi Masella was formerly Papal Nuncio to Chile and to Brazil. He is one of the six Cortina! Bishops-his see is Palestrina —and he is also Archpriest of St John Lateran's. the Pope's cathedral. Fifteen Cardinals. headed by Cardinal Masella. 500 Archbishops and Bishops and about 1,000,000 laity are expected to take part in the ceremonies in Rio.

Rio's great square will be used for the solemn functions and people are sending in gold and precious stones for the gigantic monstrance for the congress.

Workers are filling in part of the Bay of Civanabara—one of the most beautiful in the world—for the congress. The work is part of a 40-year-old plan to widen the Santos Dumont airport and to provide a site or highways. parks, and housing developments along a milelong stretch of shore. This site affords a clear view of the gigantic statue of Christ of the Corcovado overlooking the city of Rio.

Thirteen committees arc planning the congress which is due to open on July 14 and will last 10 da■s. Ocean-borne pilgrims will be accommodated in the liners anchored in Guanabata Bay.
