THROUGHOUT the world there

are now 64 Cardinals, 337 Archbishops and 1.157 Bishops of residential sees, 15 Patriarchs and 882 Archbishops and Bishops of titular secs.

These figures are given in the 1955 edition of the Holy See's yearbook, the " Annuario Pontificio." the first copy of which was presented to the Holy Father last week.

About 150 Cardinals. Archbishops and Bishops are noted as " in prison for the Faith '', "deported to unknown locality" or simply "impeded." thus indicating the persecution they arc suffering. The " Annuario " was first published under the title of "Notizie" in 1716; the present form of the yearbook appeared for the first time in 1860.

In 1872 the name was changed to "Catholic Hierarchy."

From 1885 it was printed by the Vatican Press, and became an official Vatican publication in 1899.
