AND so, indeed, it must have seemed to those countrymen of nearly a century ago whose incredulous eyes witnessed the beginnings of mechanised farming; whose ears, accustomed to the quiet rhythm of corn going down before the scythe, now rang with the rattle of strange contrivances.
