State Support of Church in Portugal

General Carmona sent a telegram to the Pope on the return home of the Portuguese delegation from the dedication dr the cathedral at Lourenco Marques.

He said : " On the return of the Patriarch of Lisbon from his tour of the Portuguese Empire as Legate of Your holiness, I beg you to accept my sincerest congratulations on the success of the mission, both religious and patriotic, in which I see the consequence of the policy of collaboration between the Church and Portugal in the formation of new civilised and Christian peoples. With the gratitude of the Portuguese nation for your benevolence towards her, I express my filial devotion. (Sgd.) General Carmona."

The Pope replied : " Being particularly sensitive to the filial expressions addressed to us by your Excellency at the end of the Legation of the Patriarch of Lisbon, we thank you for so noble a message. Confident that we will always find in the State authorities a benevolent support for sending to the colonies of the Portuguese Empire an ever-increasing number of missionaries who will ensure and make everlasting the benefits of Christian civilisation, we send your Excellency and the Portuguese nation the Apostolic Benediction in proof of our paternal affection. (Sgd.) Pope Pius XII."
