FRANK SHEED, the famous Catholic lay theologian and writer, died last Friday, November 20, in the United States at the age of 85.
One of the few lay persons to have been granted a doctorate of theology, Dr Sheed had been writing books on the subject for more than 50 years. The publishing house started by him and his late wife. Maisie Ward in 1926 is still in business, and Frank Sheed's most popular book, Theology and Sanity is still in print.
Dr Sheed's last public appearance in England was in September, when he chaired the annual Maisie Ward Sheed lecture, sponsored by the Catholic Housing Aid Society. On that occasion he boasted that he had just crossed the Atlantic for the 250th time.
