THE Society of the Sacred Heart has elected a Mother General aged 43the youngest since Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat. who founded the Society in 1800 at the age of 18 and became the first Mother General. The new Mother General is Mother Concepcion Camacho.
Formerly, the society elected its major superior for lifebut at the General Chapter held in Rome in 1967 the members felt that short-term appointments were more in keeping with the needs of the Church-that the Church of today often needed energy as much as experience.
The Mother General resigned, and a new superior, Mother Bultd, who is in her sixties, was elected. At the latest Chapter in Rome, Mother Bulto asked not to be elected for a further term and urged the Chapter members to choose someone younger, with better possibilities of vital service.
The Society of the Sacred Heart is in its 170th year, and now counts 6,500 members throughout the world. It has been expelled from several countries in its lifetime, but is now well-established in 31 Provinces and is increasing its commitment to developing countries.
