THE POPE, RACE AND S. AFRICA

HILE the discussion of the proposed sale of arms to South Africa is taking place, perhaps the words of Our Holy Father, Pope Paul --pace the Pro Fide Movement — are of particular importance. In Populonim Progressio he has written of Racism: "It is still obstacle to collaboration among underprivileged nations and a cause of division and hatred within countries whenever individuals and families see the inviolable rights of the human person held in scorn, as they themselves are unjustly subjected to a regime of discrimination because of their race or their colour. "We are deeply distressed by such a situation which is laden with threats for the future." Paragraphs 62-64 of the Ecyclical merit the careful study of all those engaged in the controversy.
