D0M Jerome Hodkinson, the recently-elected Abbot of Belmont, who comes from Colwyn Bay, Denbighshire, is not the youngest abbot Belmont has seen. Abbot Williams was elected in 1940 at the age of 36.

Dom Hodkinson studied both his philosophy and theology at Belmont but took his M.A. degree in English literature at Oxford. At present he teaches English literature at the Abbey school, where he has also taught Latin.

An enthusiastic sportsman, he manages to find time to play squash. He is also fond of reading and music, and has been a cantor at the Abbey since he was a novice.

His main aim, he says, will be to continue the work of the late Dom Robert Richardson, whom he greatly admired, especially in the liturgical field where the Abbey has a high reputation for progressive innovation.
