GRANT of $25,000 (£10,417) was made last week by the Vatican to match Protestant Bible Societies in financing projects of work on common Bible translation.

The funds will pay for semiannual sessions at which scholars will compare their work in compiling the hest writings in hundreds of ancient versions of the Hebrew Old Testament and the Greek New Testament.

After a common original language Bible is agreed on, work can begin in translating the Bible into more than 2,700 languages and distinctive dialects.

The grant. announced by Cardinal Willebrands, president of the Secretariat for Christian Unity, was turned over to the United Bible Societies, headed by the Methodist pastor, Latin Holmgren. general secretary of the American Bible Society in New York.

WCC appointment

iviR. STEPHEN C. WHIT-Ix-n-1'LE, 24, a member of the staff of New Christian, is to become information officer of the World Council of Churches' Inter-Church Aid division of the Refugee and World Service.
