B. Oliver Plunket's cause examined
THE canonisation of Blessed Oliver Plunket, Archbishop Of Armagh —Tyburn's last martyr—was brought a stage nearer on Tuesday, when his cause was examined by the Sacred Congregation of Rites.
Blessed Oliver was tried and convicted in London in June. 1681, and hanged at Tyburn on the following July 1.
The martyr's head is enshrined at Drogheda. His body was enshrined between the two World Wars in Downside Abbey Church at a ceremony attended by Cardinal Bourne and Cardinal asquet, O.S.B. Another relic is in Westminster Cathedral.
For many years pilgrimages have been made frequently to Drogheda to hasten Blessed Oliver's canonisation.
Mgr. John Stokes, V.G.. who last year succeeded Mgr. Quinn, Bishop of Kilmorc, as vice-postulator of Blessed Oliver's canonisation cause, and parish priest of St. Peter's, Drogheda, has been created a Domestic Prelate.
