Bishop Wheeler dies
BISHOP GORDON Wheeler, the former bishop of I Leeds, died last Friday aged 87 after a long illness, writes Andrew M Brown.
His successor at Leeds, Bishop David Konstant, said Bishop Wheeler had served the diocese of Leeds faithfully for 19 years. "He always loved Yorkshire and was I delighted to be able to retire here. This was where he enjoyed some of his happiest and most fruitful years. The diocese of Leeds mourns the death of a much-loved and respected pastor. May he rest in peace," Bishop I Konstant said. Bishop Wheeler's body was received into St Anne's Cathedral, Leeds on Monday. At 7.30 that evening, Mgr Peter McGuire VG, Cathedral Administrator, celebrated a Requiem Mass in the presence of Bishop David Konstant.
Bishop Konstant celebrated the Funeral Mass at the Cathedral at 11.30 on Tuesday morning, in the presence of Cardinal Hume. Bishop Wheeler was to be interred at a private ceremony in a vault at St Edward's Church, Clifford, near Wetherby. • Obituary—Page 10
