SIR'-While our school party was
in Rome last August, the English Salesian guide at the Catacombs of San Callisto kindly took us on an unconventional tour of the remoter parts of the "underground ", On the low ceiling of one chamber there was clearly scribbled the information that certain " Scoti " visited the spot in, I think, the 12th or 13th Century. I wonder if your learned correspondents. who have recently been discussing Erigena, could tell us when the inhabitants of Hibernia ceased to be called " Scoti " and those of Caledonia assumed the same style.
