Polish Paper Trouble

By a C.H Reporter Nowakowski is again in the news. Editor of Wiadomosci Polskl, a ondon Polish literary weekly with a Leftist slant, his anti-Vatican grumbles were the subject of an article in THE CATHOLIC HERALD in April. So was the rap on the knuckles the Polish Bishpp Radonski administered on him for his pains.

Then it was the Catholic authoritiee he was irritating; now it is his own Polish Government. I am told at the Polish Catholic Institute, which publishes the Common Cause, that he has indeed been again " causing trouble."

In April I said he was making use of the enemy radio in order to make his point against the Vetican, but to-day an article of his in his own paper is being made use of by the enemy for Nazi propaganda in Poland. Consequently. the Polish Government, so it is said. would like to see his paper suppressed. But as a prominent Pole has pointed out to me, " the censor here allows the paper to exist. It would be the British Government who would have to decide whether or not the paper should be stopped."

The Polieh Minietry of Information flatly deny that its Government would like Nowakowski's paper suppressed. But the rumours persist. " The Polish Government is a democratic Government and as such welcomes and admires honest criticism. It tolerates all critics," said another authority.
