Luton welcomes Cardinal Hume
CARDINAL Basil Hume paid his first ever pastoral visit to Luton in Bedfordshire this week to open a day centre for the homeless. His presence at the opening ceremony showed his commitment to the work being done at the centre which serves nearly 75 meals a day for those in need, organisers said.
Sr Eileen O'Mahony, the co-ordinator of the centre, said that the problems of homelessness were escalating. "It is only through local communities clubbing together to look after their own people in need that we can tackle this problem," she said. • Cardinal Hume is to achieve another first next month when he says the first Catholic mass at St Andrew's church, Enfield, Middlesex, since the Reformation. Cardinal Hume accepted the invitation to celebrate mass at St Andrew's as part of the church's 800th anniversary celebrations.
The church was founded by the Benedictine monks of Walden Abbey, Essex.
Prebendary Peter Morgan, Vicar of St Andrew's, said he was delighted with the cardinal's response. "We shall welcome him to our church with full and open hearts," he said.
