BISHOP Thomas McMahon of Brentwood diocese, the principal diocese to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, paid a longawaited visit recently to London’s Olympic site.
Mgr David Manson, vicar-general of Brentwood Diocese, joined him, as did James Parker, Catholic coordinator for the 2012 Games, along with 20 pupils from St Bonaventure’s Catholic school in the London Borough of Newham.
Bishop McMahon said: “It is amazing to see the size and the extent of the building work taking place here in what to date has been one of the poorest pockets of our country.
“The facilities presently under construction can only work for the long-term good of the people in the East End, for Londoners in general, and for the sporting potential of our entire nation.” Of all the venues presently being constructed, the pupils from St Bonaventure’s were exhilarated by the shape and size of the aquatics centre with its wave-like roof.
“I have been keen to see the site for some time,” the bishop said.
