" OUR WAR AND THE CRIB " U.S.A. Bishops' Christmas Pledge

The special Bishops' Committee (formed by the American hierarchy to study in the light of war the aims of the American nation to the Pope's Peace Points) has issued a pledge to assist the United States Government by every means.
The statement says: " President Roosevelt recently said that we will win the peace; amid the clouds of war we delineate the peace which is our inspiration and our strength. It has been stated clearly that we are fighting for the rights of man and security desire no conquest. We seek vengeance upon no people. Our armed forces, backed by the united nation, are struggling violently and courageously towards victory for the things which were given to (lie world upon that first Christmas, when through the Virgin Mother the Prince of Peace came and walked upon this earth. It is for peace that we are fighting and there is no contradiction in our war and the humble adoration before the Crib at Bethlehem.
"This Bishops' Committee, without entering the lines of statesmanship, will try to make clear the indispensable postulates for a just peace as enunciated by the Pope. Leaving to statesmen the details of the peace treaty, its work is to try to help, as becomes Churchmen, our Government in being the instrument of Almighty God for the setting up of the new era in our human rights, human dignity, human freedom and a sane human solidarity which will offer all peoples prosperity and the chancel of pursuing happiness."
The statement was signed by Mgr. Stritch, Archbishop of Chicago; Mgr. J. Ryan, Bishop of Omaha ; Mgr. Aloysius J. Muensh, Bishop of Fargo, N. Dakota.
